This painting was inspired by a national symbol of Angolan culture—The Thinker—which is even featured in the watermark of the Kwanza banknotes, the country’s currency. The Thinker is a sculpture of Cokwe origin, an ethnic Bantu group concentrated in northeastern Angola. The sculpture represents the figure of an elder, male or female, and reflects the deep respect that Angolan and other African cultures hold for elders, who are seen as the bearers of wisdom, life experience, and sacred knowledge.
