Title: 1001 Cranes

Acrylic on canvas.

Dimensions: 70 x 90 cm

Visual artist Monica Silva. About the artist.

The Japanese believe that by folding a thousand origami cranes, all wishes come true. Legend has it that the crane can live a thousand years, symbolizing peace and prosperity.
Sadako Sasaki, a girl who died from the radiation of the atomic bomb in Hiroshima, believed that if she folded 1000 origami cranes, she would be cured.
As her illness worsened day by day, Sadako began to pray for world peace, 'I will write peace on your wings, and you will fly all over the world,' while folding her origami.
In 1958, the statue of Sadako holding a golden crane was erected in the Peace Memorial Park in Hiroshima.
Children involved in the campaign made a wish that is forever written on the statue: "This is our cry. This is our prayer. Peace in the world."
This work of mine represents an urgent plea for peace: May the 1100 cranes make this wish come true.
May the life to come, represented here by the eggs in the nest protected by the women-generators-guardians, be born and have a future
on a planet without wars.
